Using DISC Principles to Promote Effective Leadership During Remote Working

Blogs

What is DISC?

Based on the theories of psychologist William Marston, DISC is a behavior analytics tool that identifies four different personality types. These types are dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness. Company executives often use DISC assessment tools to help in the development of training for employees, especially managers. Understanding the personality profiles of your managers, and the employees they manage can help set remote staff up for success. Below are some things to consider when providing leadership training for your managers with different personality traits.

Dominance: D-Style Managers

D-style managers are results-driven and are likely excited about the challenge of managing a team remotely. While some managers may struggle with losing a level of control in a remote environment, their confidence and desire to produce results will likely counterbalance this lack of control. To help managers with the dominant personality trait succeed, schedule regular check-ins with them. Don't micromanage, but you want to ensure them you are still there to assist. Encourage them to show consistent appreciation to their teams and remind them to stop working at the end of the day to maintain a healthy work-life balance while remote.

Influence: I-Style Managers

I-style individuals are outgoing and interactive, so they may need extra support in a remote environment. I-style managers are good at encouraging open dialogue and are generally optimistic, so they will likely maintain this style in a remote setting. When training I-style managers, help them to find new ways to express their personality and leadership style outside of an office environment. Remind managers to keep an open dialogue with team members and to encourage them to stay engaged. Providing tips to help managers avoid distractions is also helpful.

Steadiness: S-Style Managers

S-style managers are calm and trusty and will likely thrive in a remote environment. However, they tend to dislike change, so you want to address change management techniques in management training. Remind your S-style managers to interact regularly and check-in with team members to maintain personal connections.

Conscientiousness: C-Style Managers

C-style managers are logical and analytical and are well suited to working from home. However, expect to provide data-driven answers to these managers regularly to help them manage their team effectively. Remind conscientious managers to practice empathy and understanding with team members, so conflicts do not arise, and members don't feel judged.
